  1. HI, I am really interested in getting the Hill Topper Lithium Kit size 700C, but am worried that the wheel frame might be too big on my fuji road bike. The current wheel has a Shimano
105 (HB-5501-A) hub and Mavic CX22 rim using 28x1" tires. Do you think it will fit and be compatible with the kit?

I grew up in Seattle, but am now living at the top of one of the biggest hills in San Francisco. I would love to get home after work a little less sweating - if you know what I mean!

  2. From our experience 28" is usually synonymous with 700c. This means that you should have no problem with our lithium pro pack and building your own wheel. One important thing you want to check is that your rim has thirty six spokes otherwise it will not be compatible with our hub motor. We ship 261mm, 13 gage spokes with our 700c kits. If you would like we can send you spokes along with your kit for $6. If you have any further questions please call 218 779 3136 or email us at lyons@cleanrepublic.com

  3. To Cody, the 24 v motor should work climbing the hills of San Francisco as long as you do a small effort with your "power legs".

I rode my bike in sunny San Diego two weeks ago and it was awesome. The Lithium power pack lasted almost 20 miles with minimal Leg power assist.

  4. Hello,
Can i have more informations about the SLA Pro pack :

    - Does the hub have a freewheel (to use the bike without battery) ?
    - What is the max speed of the motor with 0 lbs charge ? ( can i use my legs/wind/downhills to go around 20 miles/h then add the power of the motor to go faster?)
    - How much costs shipping for SLA Pro pack to Belgium ?

    Thank you

  5. Hi Maxim,

Yes, all are motors have the ability to freewheel. We rate our kits at 15 mph but depending on wheel size, rider weight, hill gradient and wind you can get about 20 mph. If you are going down hill and then engage the motor your speed will increase. You can get a lot more information by reading our forum posts.

  10. To All You Clean Republic Fans,

Here is a short story which makes us here at Clean Republic work harder and more diligently to provide you with products that are simple to use and the support to keep you enjoying them. We recently got a complaint from a customer about a defect with the Hill Topper kit that they bought from us. They customer was upset because they had been using the kit on their bike for three months and had changed their whole daily routine so much that they could not do without it. The customer blamed us for them not being able to get to work because the Hill Topper kit was broken.

We were not able to help the customer get to work that day but we did overnight here a replacement kit. As you know we will always do our best to work with our customers until all issues are resolved. The best part of this story is this. People are able to change there lives, improve their health and have fun on there bikes again with a little help. We are empowered by people telling us that we are to blame for helping them change their lives for the better.

As we continue to improve our products and offer more of them we appreciate your support.

  11. The "Featherweight Lithium Hill Topper" kit prototype battery is now in our factory undergoing rigorous tests. Weighing in at a remarkable 2.2 lbs this new small lithium batter will take you 12 miles on one charge.

Many of our customers have been asking us about developing a smaller lithium batter with the same range as our SLA Hill Topper kit. So we have built one for them and will be offering it shortly.

The dimensions are approximately 6" long, 3.7" hight and 2.5" wide. Total battery weight is 2.2 lbs. The current tested range is twelve miles.

We will be offering this new battery in a kit along side our current SLA Hill Topper kit and as a stand alone product. No price has yet been set.

This will give our customers a substantially lighter smaller kit and good range.

  12. Very interested in purchasing your hill topper kit. I currently own a Dahon Espresso and was wondering if it would be possible to install the hill topper on my big without any modifications.

  13. Hi John,

Great to hear you are interested in our product and yes you can. One think you should check. You need 100mm clearance between your front forks and we could not find the info on the Dahon Espresso spec sheet. When you order select the 26" wheel option. The tire we send you is not as wide as your 2" one but you can just change the tire if you want your bike to look sharp and mach up with the back on.

We look forward to your business.

  15. Hi,
I'm amazed at how easy it is to convert bikes with your kit! However, the bike I plan to get has color-rimmed tires. I wouldn't want to replace my wheel, and then have odd wheels. Do you accept shipment of special wheels, then return them ready to install? thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi,
We don't want you to have an odd wheel either. Here is our recommendation to get around this problem. If you order our Lithium Pro pack for $479 (everything except the wheel) then take it to your local bike shop and have them lace the hub motor into your wheel your problem will be solved. It usually costs between $30 and $60 to have a wheel laced. You will save yourself over $200 this way.

  18. Have you all heard anything about the Copenhagen Wheel? The news reports I've seen claim it's a breakthrough technology that will revolutionize electric bikes. What do you all think? Are the reports just MIT hype? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hey Brian, Great question. I'm glad you asked about that thing. Basically, my opinion on the Copenhagen Wheel is that It's over-engineered for what the world actually needs. I believe we need simple, practical (which means affordable, among other things) alternatives to one-person-per-car transportation models. Due to availability, cost, and complexity, I don't think the Copenhagen Wheel has as good a chance at serving those principles as our design does. It is true, however, that I appreciate the fact that it is out there, that it's in the news and people are talking about it. If nothing else, it will cause people to raise their eyebrows and consider re-thinking assumptions about urban transportation and energy consumption, and that is always a good thing. And... it can't hurt to have those same people surfing the net comparing conversion kits and finding that ours is better... and getting a Hill Topper for themselves. =) -Michael Clean Republic Co-Founder, CEO

  20. I've been shopping years... for a low profile brushless hub and lithium ion kit under 10lbs... and at about three hundred and something bucks....now with your 2.2lb lithium battery that could happen. Maybe at about $369 or something like that.... it could really be a game changer.
I've been tempted for a while to buy the dewalt 36 volt lithium power pack and use that... but i have felt that doing so... might be dangerous. I recently told the Copenhagen wheel people that unless they released it as a single speed and in black... that they would be shooting themselves in the foot. There is also the issue of having your shartphone on your handlebars, exposed to the elements. So anyway... i am looking forward to your featherweight lithium... it's very flat ground here in tucson.

  21. Thanks for your post. We are excited about it as well. The price has not been determined yet but we will keep you posted about our progress. We are currently testing the 2.2 lb battery here in Seattle and look forward to offering it to you.

  22. I currently commute a relatively flat 3.6mi to work on my 26" MTB in about 20 min, averaging nearly 11mph (including stoplights, etc). This leisurely pace allows me to arrive *without* having to cool down, shower, and then change from biking to street clothes. On the return home, I can pedal harder when in the mood (shirt goes into laundry regardless :-)

Soon, my commute to work will increase to 11mi (still flat), and I don't want to spend a full hour getting to work. The nirvana e-bike for me would be something that boosted my average speed to ~22 mph, with me contributing about the same amount of power pedaling the rear wheel as before. My travel time would only increase to 30min, and I'd still arrive without needing to cool-down, shower, and change clothes.

So now I have a question: Is there a way to configure/adjust a Hill Topper Lithium kit that will utilize the 250W motor to increase my average speed while pedaling, even if it means significantly sacrificing the amount of torque available for starting out or climbing hills?

    Thanks,
    Chuck

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Chuck,

We use a controller which is in our battery bag to control the RPM and torque that the motor puts out. You can not alter the setup without taking the controller apart or using a different controller with our kit. There are many for sale on the internet. Needless to say if you modify the kit our warranty will not cover it anymore. The best way to increase your speed is to use a larger wheel and a thinner tire along with a lighter bike if possible. We have tested a cross bike with 700x23c tires, 200 lb rider on the flat and recorded and average speed o f 20 mph using the lithium Hill Topper kit.

  25. Maybe you can help. Been over two weeks since I emailed customer support. Ive heard nothing. Hilltopper Lithium kit has to be continuously reset. The kit works intermittently for 2-4 seconds at a time. Then shuts down. I have to cycle main power switch to get it working. I've followed charging instructions to the letter, and never run it under full load. Kit is just under a year old. I've removed it. I did enjoy using my 5.5 KW solar panel array (runs the house-supplies 85% of our power) to charge. There was something very cool about having the sun assist my pedaling. Unfortunately...... bbohns@gmail.com
